In terms of didactics, we run simulation sessions weekly at one of the largest simulation centers in the area (serving the entire Health and Hospitals Corporation-13 hospitals). We also host an annual simwars competition within the ALLNYCEM network of residency programs and also founded a hybrid simulation fellowship between Jacobi and HHC. Our simulation sessions are robust and have involved everything from MCI events to tox escape rooms to protest medicine and even collaborations with other residency programs on joint simulation days.

Hospital Capabilities: St. Joseph hospital is a community hospital based on the middle of Long Island. It is a primary stroke center, STEMI center and is part of the Catholic Health System of Long Island.
Special Program Features: The St. Joseph Hospital Emergency Medicine Program is dedicated to training the next generation of emergency medicine physicians. Our program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to provide residents with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in the fast-paced environment of an emergency department. St. Joseph is a community hospital with the resources, volume, understanding and teaching faculty to provide excellent education. You will get the clinical experiences you’d expect anywhere. During your time in our residency, you will regularly work with experts in Ultrasound, EMS and disaster management, International medicine, Critical care and Hospital Administration. The three-year emergency medicine residency is based at St. Joseph, where you will spend most of your time. However, learning different practice styles at other institutions is always great. We provide significant clinical experiences at Good Samaritan University Hospital (an adult and pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center). You will also get a different clinical experience while rotating at St. Catherine of Siena Hospital, another community site with academic faculty.
We offer a 1:1 resident to attending ratio on shift, with no competition for procedures from any other specialty or residency. Being a community hospital, majority of procedures are performed by the EM team, so our residents get a wealth of experiences.

SUNY Upstate Medical University
750 E. Adams Street
Syracuse, New York 13202
Program Director: Jennifer Campoli, DO
Assistant Program Director: Erin Underriner, MD; Matthew Camara, MD
Program Coordinator: Kara Welch | welchka@upstate.edu
Number of Residents: 34
Fellowships Offered: Medical Toxicology, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Ultrasound, MedED & Sim, HBO, EMS, Global Emergency Medicine and Sports Medicine
Hospital Capabilities: Medical Toxicology, Hyperbaric Medicine Services, Wound Care, Trauma Care, Burn Care, Stroke Care
During their three years with us, our residents are responsible for staffing the University Hospital ED (a tertiary care center), the University Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department (the regions only dedicated pediatric ED), the Upstate Community Hospital Emergency Department (a community hospital operated by Upstate Medical University), and the Syracuse VA Emergency Department. As the only tertiary care center in central NY, our catchment area extends as far north as the Canadian border and as far south as Pennsylvania. Despite living in a medium-sized city, our patient volume between all four sites approaches 150K per year, and our residents are exposed to the full spectrum of emergency medicine care and pathology.
Special Program Features: We strive to make your work-life balance as good as can be, and our residents routinely comment that the collegial relationship between the EM faculty and residents is one of the best aspects of the program. Except at the VA, shifts in the ED are only 8.5 hours long. Our residents have an active social life, play on a league volleyball team together, and rock climb and practice martial arts (along with some attendings) at the local climbing and Jiu Jitsu gyms. Whether you’re single or married with children, Syracuse–and Central New York in general–has much to offer and is far more affordable than most major metropolitan areas. Syracuse University offers Division I sports; the beautiful Finger Lakes and their wineries are within an hour’s drive; the local restaurants, music, and theater scenes are excellent; there is endless backpacking and canoeing both locally and in the Adirondacks; the summer and fall are gorgeous, and the winter is great with local skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snowshoeing, & ice fishing. And, if you need that big city fix, New York City and Toronto are only a 4-hour car ride away with Boston and Philadelphia not much farther.
Fun perks of the program are Syracuse Dome- crowd physician, Amphitheater Concerts, New York State Fair Infirmary, Colgate University Sports and NASCAR.
