22 Oct Bruce Grattan, DO: A 2025 Unsung Hero

Dr. Grattan has seemingly endless enthusiasm for emergency medicine. He has an incredible amount of energy on shift, even 12-hour night shifts. Our nursing staff knows they can rely on him to provide excellent, timely care of patients. Our staff also feels comfortable going to him with any questions, knowing the responses will be free from judgement. Our institutions, Rochester Regional Health, St Lawrence Region, were his first job out of residency. We’ve had the pleasure of watching grow from a new graduate attending adapting to rural emergency medicine to now, one of our trusted department directors. His positive attitude and work ethic at all times uplifts his co-workers and colleagues to also perform at their best.
He is the leader in education for our Emergency Departments. Initially voluntary, he organized journal clubs and took the lead on student education. This has grown into an organized education leadership position where he runs an ED APP Fellowship for new graduate PAs and NPs to transition rapidly in to becoming effective Emergency Department clinicians. This has had the effect of increasing recruitment and retention of not only APP’s but attending physicians. This educational program has allowed us to start hosting visiting residents from EM residents from around the state and encouraged our entire team to stay up to date with the latest research in emergency medicine. Being ready for resident training and education, has kept all of us current on evidence-based emergency medicine practice.
