Daniel Shand, MD: A 2025 Unsung Hero

Dr. Daniel Shand is a kind and thoughtful emergency physician, caring for the community in the greater Rochester, New York area for more than ten years. He is a soft spoken and steadfast in advocate for his patients. An avid athlete, Dr. Shand has run in numerous marathons and continues to be involved in both recreational hockey and individual sports. As the Medical Director of Rochester General Hospital (RGH), Dr. Shand organized interdepartmental sport events helping to promote collegiality to the hospital system while supporting individual health and well-being.

Dr. Shand served as Medical Director for RGH though the difficult days of COVID, navigating the rapidly changing health care environment, adeptly adjusting to every new challenge, be it boarding, staffing shortage, or the many resource limitations we experienced. Dr. Shand was instrumental in the evolution of the stroke program at RGH, streamlining and integrating the ED and the Neurology team’s care. His dedication and hard work ensured the continued Comprehensive Stroke Center accreditation. The Rochester community has been well served by Dr. Shand’s hard work and his continued care, and we are fortunate to have him as one of our own.

Recipient Bio:
Dr. Shand resides in Pittsford, NY with his wife and two children. He works as an Emergency Physician in the Rochester Regional Health System.
Dr. Shand obtained his MD from State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo School of Medicine, and did his emergency medicine residency training at SUNY at Buffalo as well. He served as Medical Director for the Rochester General Adult Emergency Department from 2018-2025.
