22 Oct Jordan Ship, MD: A 2025 Unsung Hero

Dr. Jordan Ship embodies the essence of the Unsung Hero of Emergency Medicine. A physician of integrity, humility, and kindness, he has transformed two small critical access hospitals in the Adirondacks into thriving centers of excellence within the University of Vermont Health. As Medical Director, he inherited a fragmented staffing model and re-imagined it entirely—creating cohesive, high-functioning teams of board-certified EPs who now deliver the same level of care found in tertiary centers.
Beyond operational success, Dr. Ship has raised the bar for rural emergency care. He has built bridges with EMS, local clinicians, and network subspecialists to ensure seamless, patient-centered care across long distances. His departments now serve as models of collaboration, stability, and joy in the clinical practice or rural EM.
Through his quiet leadership, Dr. Ship elevated not only clinical standards but also morale, education, and community trust. He has fostered an environment where residents and students now request rural rotations, describing them as “career-defining.” His mentorship is grounded in wisdom and humility—reminding others to “find the biggest rock and move it as a team.”
Dr. Ship’s leadership is not loud or self-promoting—it is steady, compassionate, and transformative. He reminds us that true excellence is found not in recognition, but in the communities we strengthen, the teams we nurture, and the patients whose lives are quietly improved every day.
What sets Dr. Jordan Ship apart within our health network is his transformational leadership in the most rural and resource-limited parts of our system. While many focus on advancing emergency medicine in large academic centers, Dr. Ship has devoted his energy to elevating care in two small critical access hospitals serving isolated Adirondack communities, miles from tertiary support. Rather than imposing an academic model, he built one uniquely suited to rural medicine—anchored in excellence, adaptability, and community, and still staffed by board certified emergency physicians.
What truly differentiates Dr. Ship is his belief that culture is the foundation of quality care. He leads by connection—creating trust among physicians, nurses, and EMS partners, fostering joy in teamwork, and reminding everyone that “community hospitals run on relationships.” His morning potluck tradition and quiet mentorship have turned small departments into places of pride, learning, and stability.
Dr. Ship’s impact cannot be measured in size or volume but in the ripple effect of his work: stronger teams, higher standards, and renewed enthusiasm for rural emergency medicine. Through humility and vision, he has redefined what leadership looks like in the smallest, yet most essential, corners of our healthcare system.
