Awards

Every year New York ACEP honors individuals for their contributions to the advancement of emergency care in New York State. Recipients are selected by the Board of Directors by majority vote and most awards are presented at the New York ACEP annual meeting held in conjunction with the Scientific Assembly at the Sagamore Hotel on Lake George.

Awards

Advancing Emergency Care Award

This award recognizes a New York ACEP member for a significant contribution in advancing emergency care in New York State. Contributions to be considered include; Patient Care (improved delivery modes, quality care improvement, cost containment); EMS (organization, service, public education, disaster plan); Education (new or improved teaching methods, publication(s), education programs, evaluation mechanisms); Research or major contribution to a New York ACEP priority objective. The award was first presented in 2008.

Edward W. Gilmore Lifetime Achievement Award

The Edward W. Gilmore Lifetime Achievement Award honors an individual who has made significant contributions to the specialty of emergency medicine through education, leadership, mentoring and the advancement of quality emergency care. The recipient will have made a lifelong commitment and lasting impact on the specialty of emergency medicine and New York ACEP.

Exemplary Commitments to Physician Well-Being Award

This award recognizes Departments and Residency Programs demonstrating exemplary physician well-being through operations, social functions, diversification, equity, education and/or environment. This award will be presented next in 2025. Nomination deadline: February 7, 2025

Leadership in Government Award

This award recognizes vision and leadership in the advancement of emergency patient care. The recipient has promoted patient access to comprehensive, affordable, high-quality health care in a manner consistent with the high standards of New York ACEP. The award was first presented in 1994.

Michael G. Guttenberg Outstanding Contribution to EMS Award

This award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to EMS in New York State through leadership, education, participation in system development and improvement or through exceptional performance of prehospital care duties. The individual may be a physician, nurse, EMT, paramedic, other medical provider, first responder, local official, member of the law enforcement community or citizen/consumer.

JoAnne Tarantelli Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medicine in New York Award

This award recognizes significant contributions to emergency medicine in New York to improve patient care, cost containment, quality of care, disaster planning, or education of emergency physicians or the public. The individual may be a friend of New York ACEP that has helped advance the practice of emergency medicine in New York State. The award was created to acknowledge the physician contributions from outside of New York State and non-physicians.

National Leadership Award

This award recognizes outstanding service and dedication to advancing emergency care. The award was first presented in 2007.

Outstanding Researcher Award

This award recognizes researchers within New York State. By highlighting the successful emergency medicine research within New York State, these awards will identify research faculty to act as mentors for early career researchers within the state and facilitate recruitment of additional research faculty. Nomination deadline: February 7, 2025

Physician of the Year Award

This award is conferred in recognition of contributions to the advancement of emergency medicine in New York State. The recipient has demonstrated outstanding dedication and commitment to the improvement of quality patient care and the advancement of emergency medicine in New York through clinical, research, educational and/or administrative activities. The achievements of this individual have enhanced the state’s health care system and have advanced the profession of emergency medicine. The award was first presented in 1994.

Young Physician and Resident Leadership & Advocacy Award

This award was created to promote leadership and to advance political action and advocacy among emergency physicians through attendance at the ACEP Legislative Advocacy Conference and Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. Application deadline: November 14, 2025

New York ACEP Unsung Heroes of Emergency Medicine

A New York State Emergency Medicine Unsung Hero goes beyond simply being the embodiment of what it means to be an emergency physician. They are a stalwart of the emergency department, who is deeply committed to the mission of the emergency department, their colleagues, co-worker and patients. The unsung hero is always willing to help a colleague – within the clinical environment or not. They are the trusted individual who is known to bring comfort and a smile to the faces of all those around. Submission Deadline: October 17, 2025
