Improving Trauma Care Worldwide
International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) is a global 501c3 non-profit organization with headquarters in Illinois, USA. Today, ITLS has more than 130 Chapters and Training Centres in over 50 countries around the world that offer training, education, and research opportunities for emergency care providers.
ITLS empowers emergency care providers with the knowledge and skill to provide optimal care in the prehospital setting. ITLS has a variety of education and training opportunities for all levels and backgrounds for all emergency care providers around the world.
Focused Training and Education for Better Patient Care
ITLS courses equip students with the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to provide optimal care for trauma patients. The training emphasizes rapid assessment, appropriate interventions, and the identification of life-threatening conditions. The ITLS framework for quick, effective trauma care has become a global standard, applicable in any emergency situation.
Courses combine classroom instruction with hands-on skills stations and practical assessment scenarios, allowing students to apply what they’ve learned in simulated trauma settings. Each course is accompanied by an evidence-based manual, meticulously crafted by trauma care experts, and continually updated based on the latest research.
ITLS courses are designed, managed, and delivered by experienced instructors with backgrounds in EMS, pre-hospital care, and the ITLS methodology.
ITLS Basic and Advanced
These comprehensive courses are designed for providers who are first to evaluate and stabilize the trauma patient. The courses provide complete training in the skills needed for rapid assessment, resuscitation, stabilization and transportation of trauma patients.
The ITLS Basic course provides the core of knowledge and skills appropriate for all levels of EMS personnel, including EMT-Bs, first responders and other technicians.
The ITLS Advanced course builds on this knowledge, emphasizing evaluation steps and sequencing as well as techniques for resuscitating and packaging patients. ITLS Advanced is appropriate for advanced EMTs, paramedics, trauma nurses, physicians and other advanced EMS personnel. Hands-on stations include:
In order to assist New York ACEP ITLS course coordinators in meeting the requirements needed to print course cards/certificates, see the checklist below for your reference. We will be unable to assist any agency that does not submit the following materials as dictated by the timeline.
In addition to student needs, these timelines are important to allow affiliate faculty to attend and audit courses throughout the State. Course auditing helps us to address concerns of coordinators, instructors and students to improve future course offerings.
Once all documentation is received and approved by New York ACEP ITLS, approval will be given for course coordinators to print cards and certificates from the ITLS Course Management System.
Reciprocity is granted to ITLS instructors from other states. An instructor coming into New York must provide notification to the New York ACEP ITLS Program Coordinator and supply current instructor documentation. This documentation will include the instructor’s past ITLS instruction activities and a letter confirming the activity from their former area Medical Director.
Once approved by the New York ACEP ITLS Medical Director, the instructor candidate will be briefed and monitored by a New York ACEP ITLS faculty member.
The 9th Edition ITLS eTrauma: Taking Trauma Training Online course reinterprets the ITLS Provider classroom instruction in a self-paced, online format that focuses on the essential knowledge to take better care of trauma patients. ITLS stresses rapid assessment, appropriate intervention and identification of immediate life threats. The ITLS framework for rapid, appropriate and effective trauma care is a global standard that works in any situation. The ITLS eTrauma course can be used for continuing education or as the first step in achieving your ITLS Basic or Advanced Provider certification.
ITLS Recertification courses keep experienced ITLS providers and instructors up to date with the ITLS curriculum and skills.
New York ACEP is excited about the prospect of being able to make ITLS available in other areas. To establish your agency as a ITLS education site, you will need to submit a letter of intent by e-mail on the following materials:
