01 Nov Matthew Bai, MD: A 2024 Unsung Hero
Dr. Matthew Bai has significantly impacted our institution as Associate Medical Director, overseeing all risk management initiatives and patient safety protocols. His leadership in coordinating root cause analyses, managing sentinel events, and implementing innovative patient safety solutions has improved operational efficiency and higher standards of care across our department. Additionally, he has been instrumental in organizing the observation unit, a crucial component of patient care, while supervising a team of physician assistants to ensure seamless daily operations. In addition, he coordinates our efforts with the Cardiac Catheterization lab, being instrumental in the formation and designation of Mount Sinai Queens as a STEMI-receiving institution. He has worked on implementing a STEMICath Aid app, an innovative tool that coordinates care for STEMI patients across a multidisciplinary team of cardiac interventionalists, emergency physicians, and pre-hospital personnel, ensuring patients get care in a timely fashion. He also has several roles throughout the Emergency Medicine Service Line of the Mount Sinai Health System, working on standardizing policies and practices across the seven emergency departments throughout the five boroughs. Dr. Bai is an inspiration to his peers, and the staff enjoys his presence in the department.
What sets Dr. Bai apart from others in our institution is his unmatched dedication to excellence, both in clinical practice and in his leadership responsibilities. His ability to balance administrative duties with hands-on patient care while fostering a collaborative work environment makes him a unique asset. Patients love the care that he delivers, as evidenced by the numerous Operation Recognition awards he has received on their behalf. In addition, the staff adores him, and several STAR awards have been conferred to him by a multidisciplinary group of practitioners, including nurses, physician assistants, medical technicians, etc. His fluency in both English and Mandarin enables him to bridge communication gaps in patient care, further enhancing the level of service provided in a multicultural environment.
Recipient Bio:
Dr. Bai’s background is impressive, having completed his Emergency Medicine residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, following his medical degree from Chicago Medical School and a Master’s in Physiology from Georgetown University. He holds several certifications, including PALS, NRP, ACLS instructor certification and is Board certified in Emergency Medicine. Recently, he went to Barcelona, Spain, to present his work on the STEMICathAid app and has since been published on these efforts. Dr. Bai’s excellent work ethic, ingenuity, and commitment to innovation are evident in his voluntary presentations and teaching activities, where he shares his knowledge and skills with residents and medical and PA students. In addition, he is an oral Board examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine. His professionalism and leadership continue to leave a lasting mark on our institution. His expertise is sought out and he continues to be a presence on several media outlets, including CBS news, ABC7, Washington Post and others.
