01 Nov Michael Lamberta, MD FACEP CHSE: A 2024 Unsung Hero
It is my pleasure to nominate Dr. Michael Lamberta for the Unsung Hero Award. I believe Dr. Lamberta embodies the “unsung hero”. Dr. Lamberta is a “nocturnist”. He works the busy night shifts every week. Despite this, he still makes time during the days to teach residents and faculty in the simulation lab.
Dr. Lamberta is always a calming presence in the ED. No matter how busy the ED is, Dr. Lamberta always remains cool and collected. The staff looks to him as the clear leader and he reassures everyone that they will be able to get through the shift.
Dr. Lamberta began working at Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital before it was fully staffed by EM doctors. Despite this challenging situation, Dr. Lamberta quickly emerged as a leader in the department. He began improving the level of care and helped lay the “groundwork” for Maimonides ultimately taking over the emergency department.
Dr. Lamberta is known as a phenomenal teacher in simulation. He consistently makes time for any learners who are interested in participating in simulation. He has a unique ability to relate to his learners in a way that makes them feel comfortable and allows them to maximize their learning.
Dr. Lamberta not only teaches in simulation, but he also “brings simulation to the clinical area”. He designed and implemented an “in situ simulation” program to educate the entire ED team including nurses, PCA’s, respiratory therapy, and pharmacy. He unites all the disciplines to improve patient care. He has earned the respect of many throughout the hospital due to these initiatives.
In summary, I believe Dr. Lamberta embodies the “unsung hero”. He never looks for accolades. He simply gets the job done. It is for all of the above reasons that I am excited to nominate Dr. Michael Lamberta for the NY ACEP Unsung Hero Award.
