Laurie Malia, DO: A 2024 Unsung Hero

As the Director of Clinical Informatics and the Medical Director of Electronic Health Record Integration for the Columbia University Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Laurie Malia has improved clinical processes within the electronic medical record and made meaningful impacts towards patient care. As the west campus EPIC physician lead, Dr. Malia oversees more than 50 reporting projects for the enterprise EDs and has contributed to the successful implementation of EPIC go-lives, supporting all of NYP’s west campus Emergency Departments. In her role as the Assistant Medical Director of the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department, she has dedicated herself to improve clinical operations for acute care, trauma, and pediatric emergency medicine.

Colleagues describe Dr. Malia as an exceptional leader and team player, who excels across many facets of the department—clinical care, informatics, administration, and education. Her dedication goes beyond her expertise in informatics and point-of-care ultrasound. Dr. Malia is admired for her humility and approachability. She is always willing to support others and is an invaluable member of the ED team. In addition to her strong leadership skills, Dr. Malia is a respected educator, and has been the recipient of the 2019 Pediatric Physician of the Year, nominated by pediatric residents throughout the institution at the NYP Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, and the 2022 Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician of the Year, a teaching award conferred by the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellows for one faculty.

Recipient Bio:
Dr. Laurie Malia is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in Emergency Medicine at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. She is a board-certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty at the NYP Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department. Dr. Malia completed her residency and fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the University of Connecticut’s Connecticut Children’s Hospital. Dr. Malia completed an additional fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Ultrasound at the Columbia University Department of Emergency Medicine.
