01 Nov Michael McMahon, MD: A 2024 Unsung Hero
Dr. McMahon exemplifies the true spirit of an emergency physician, tirelessly dedicated to the mission of our emergency department, and consistently going above and beyond for patients and colleagues alike. Working at a non-academic community ED, Dr. McMahon has been a staunch advocate for implementing evidence-based care. His commitment to continually improving clinical care is evident through his voluntary participation and leadership on the Stroke Committee. Dr. McMahon also serves on the board of directors for the Foundation, which plays a vital role in advancing healthcare initiatives in the North Country. His selflessness and dedication to the community are evident in everything he does. In addition to his extracurriculars, Dr. McMahon is an outstanding clinician and teammate in the trenches of the ED. He tirelessly provides empathetic, patient-centered care. His calm and unflappable demeanor in high-pressure situations sets a reassuring tone for both patients and colleagues and he is universally beloved by all members of the ED, from techs to RNs, to the physicians working alongside him. In summary, Dr. Michael McMahon is a remarkable emergency physician whose creativity, compassion, and commitment to excellence make him an ideal candidate for the New York ACEP Unsung Heroes of Emergency Medicine award. He embodies the essence of what it means to be an emergency physician, and it is with great enthusiasm that I recommend him for this well-deserved recognition.
Dr. McMahon stands out among his colleagues as one of the few original community practice physicians who has seamlessly navigated the transition to being part of the regional academic health network. His adaptability and resilience during this shift reflect his profound commitment to providing exceptional care to the members of his community. Uniquely, as a physician who predominantly focuses on clinical practice, Dr. McMahon is deeply involved in non-clinical activities, such as his work on the Stroke Committee and his role as a member of the Board of Directors for the Foundation of CVPH. He has repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to education and collaboration, aimed at advancing stroke care (as well as all other ED care) in our community. His dedication to these initiatives not only enhances patient outcomes but also sets a standard for clinical excellence, inspiring newer providers in the region to engage in collaborative efforts that benefit both patients and the healthcare community as a whole.
