The Nuvance Health Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a three-year residency program centered at Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC), a large tertiary care hospital with ACS accredited Level II Trauma Center, Primary Stroke Center and STEMI Center; overlooking the Hudson River, 75 miles north of NYC. We are a high acuity, high volume ED servicing a very large population. Our ED currently treats 77,000 visits annually (85% adult and 15% pediatric) and we have recently relocated to a brand-new hospital to accommodate this ever-growing population equipped with 65 individual care rooms, 3 trauma bays, and helipad. While the majority of rotations will occur at VBMC, the program has been structured to ensure the residents receive an exposure to a wide range of pathology and acuity, in a variety of settings. For example, residents will gain community hospital experience during their rotation at Northern Dutchess Hospital located in the historic, charming town of Rhinebeck, NY. In addition, residents will spend three months of immersive pediatric care in the PICU and Pediatric ED at renowned Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Westchester, NY.

Our residency program covers two of the three hospitals on Staten Island, which is a place that serves a population of 500,000 people. Staten Island University Hospital North is the busiest hospital on Staten Island, seeing approximately 98,000 patients per year. SIUH North is a Level 1 Trauma, Level 2 Pediatric Trauma, STEMI center with a 24-hour cath lab, a regional burn center, an envenomation center, stroke, and endovascular stroke center. SIUH South is a community-based hospital with a faster pace and limited backup services available. SIUH South sees approximately 35,000 patients per year.

The Upstate Medical University Emergency Medicine program in Syracuse, NY provides its residents with one of the highest quality learning environments in both academic and community settings. The Department of Emergency Medicine exists to promote the specialty of Emergency Medicine and related specialties through excellence in scholarly patient care, education, and research.

Existing as part of the SUNY Upstate Medical University, the Upstate Emergency Medicine Residency Program was established in 1991 as a three year training program. The first graduating class of six residents completed their training in 1995. Alumni have spread throughout the United States and have found jobs in a variety of clinical settings including fellowship positions.

Now graduating eleven residents per year, the Upstate EM program has enjoyed the honor of maintaining accreditation by the Residency Review Committee (RRC) since its inception.

Each of our hospitals serves patients with vastly different socioeconomic characteristics, offering residents the advantage of treating a wide range of patient demographics, both urban and suburban patient populations, and a rich spectrum of pathology. Our emergency medicine residency program emphasizes trauma and critical care management, pediatric exposure, and advanced training in all the subspecialties of emergency medicine. SIMULATION: monthly sessions for all residents at the simulation center. Residents are exposed to critically ill adult and pediatric high-fidelity simulation patients and expected to manage them in a controlled observed environment, allowing residents to even become comfortable managing pathologies that are less infrequently encountered in the ER. These cases are followed by formal discussions and individualized feedback sessions to foster personal resident growth.
